Profile
(Yotsu)
Yotsu
Contemporary artist. Born in Osaka in 1986; lives and works in Hyogo, Japan.
Self-taught, she began calligraphy at 30 and turned fully to painting in sumi ink at 35. After five solo exhibitions from 2021, she established her current practice of Echizen white hemp paper and highly concentrated animal glue, and began working as Yotsu in 2026.
Using blue-black and tea-toned sumi ink and animal glue of up to 12% concentration, she makes works on paper that probe the boundary of existence at 400nm, the edge of visible light, and the emergence of bodily density. In an age already fused with the digital, she fixes on paper, as irreversible traces, the friction heat still generated inside the body.
